Second Circuit – District Court
Overview
The District Court in Hana hears cases filed in the Hana Division encompassing Kahikinui, Kaupo, Kipahulu, Hana and Ko'olau. The District Court in Lahaina hears cases filed in the Lahaina Division which encompasses all portions of Maui island lying west of Wailuku Division. The District Court in Lana`i City hears cases filed in the Division of Lana`i which encompasses all of Lana`i Island. The District Court of Moloka`i hears cases filed in the Moloka`i Division which encompasses the entire Moloka`i Island. The District Court in Wailuku hears cases filed anywhere on the Island of Maui with the exception of Hana and Lahaina.
Specialties
The District Courts can hear cases over traffic violations, misdemeanors, money claims under $40,000, landlord-tenant actions, ejectment, small claims under $5,000, and temporary restraining orders.
Eligibility Information
To start a case in District Court, one must file a statement of claim either 1) in-person at the Hana court or 2) online by registering for Judiciary Electronic Filing and Service System (JEFS). The person whom the claim is against must be served notice before the trial will be heard.
